How do you secure French doors from a break-in?

In two layers: strengthen the doors themselves, then add a security screen with its own lock. The first layer costs little and helps doors that are closed. The second is what lets you open the doors and stay protected.

Start with these low-cost fixes:

• Bolts on the fixed door. On most French doors, one door is held shut by bolts at the top and bottom, and the other door locks into it. Longer, sturdier bolts that reach well into the frame above and the floor below make the pair harder to push in.
• Long screws. Short screws in hinges and strike plates often reach only the thin door jamb. Long screws that reach the wall framing hold better when someone kicks the door.
• Hinge pins on doors that open out. When French doors swing out, the hinges sit on the outside of the house. Non-removable hinge pins or hinge security studs keep the doors from being lifted out.
• Security film on the glass. It helps hold broken glass together, so reaching in to the lock takes longer. It does not stop a door from being forced.
• A brace inside. A door bar or brace helps hold closed doors shut, but only while someone is home to set it.
• Lights, cameras and alarm sensors. They make a quiet approach harder and tell you when a door opens. A camera records and an alarm alerts, but neither holds a door shut.

Are French doors easy to break into?

Yes, many are, and the weak spot is usually the center, where the two doors meet.

The center is weak because there is no solid frame there. On a single door, the lock goes into a frame fixed to the wall. On most pairs of French doors, one door locks into the other, and that other door is held only by bolts at the top and bottom. A hard kick where the doors meet pushes on both doors at once, and short bolts or thin screws can give way.

Glass is the second weak spot. French doors are mostly glass, so a broken pane near the handle can let someone reach in and open the lock from inside. Doors that open out add a third: hinges on the outside of the house.
