How strong is a security screen?
Our security doors passed the forced entry test against A, B, and C loads, up to 300 pounds of force. They were independently tested and certified by the National Certified Testing Laboratory (NCTL) and exceeded the standards for high-performance metal protection. The other results we publish:

What types of security screen mesh are there?
Four common types: woven stainless steel, perforated aluminum, expanded steel and insect mesh. From across the street they can look alike, but each one is built for a different job.
Woven stainless steel mesh. Stainless steel wire woven into a tight grid and fixed into a frame. Its strength comes from how thick the wire is and how dense the weave is. It keeps the view, the airflow and the bug protection of a regular screen.
Perforated aluminum. A solid aluminum sheet punched with rows of small holes. How much you see through it and how much air comes in depends on the size and pattern of the holes.
Expanded steel. A steel sheet cut and stretched into a diamond pattern. The diamond openings are usually too large to stop insects on their own, so it is often paired with a separate insect screen, and it has a heavier look.
Insect mesh. The fiberglass or thin aluminum screen on a regular screen door or window. It keeps bugs out, and that is all it is built for: a pocket knife cuts it, and a push can pop it out of the frame.
When you compare quotes, ask which of these you are getting. Woven stainless steel keeps the look of a regular screen while it stands up to cutting, prying and kicking, which is why every Boss screen uses it.
What is the strongest security screen?
We use the strongest mesh available. It’s a 12x12 per sq inch weave, which is 75% stronger than a 10x10 weave. The wire is 0.035-inch stainless steel, and the mesh is woven in the USA.
But the mesh is only the first check. A screen is as strong as its weakest part, so check these four things on any quote or spec sheet, ours included:
- Wire thickness: ask for the wire diameter in inches. Thicker wire is harder to cut. Ours is 0.035-inch stainless steel wire.
- Mesh count: ask for the weave, written like 12x12 or 10x10. Ours is 12x12, the denser of the two.
- How the mesh is fixed: strong mesh only helps if it stays in the frame when someone pries at the edge. Ask how the mesh is held in the frame and how the screen is fastened. - The lock: ask how the door locks. A single latch is the easiest place to force a door. Our swing doors use a true 3-point locking system.
